Project Overview

Harold and the Purple Crayon is an upcoming American fantasy film directed by Carlos Saldanha. I worked as a freelancer lighting artist under the animation studio, Bent Image Lab.

Project Process

1. This is a concept reference made by our concept team. Based on the reference, I can move on to the lighting phase in Nuke.

2. This is a still frame I did in Nuke. Before moving on to the animation part, I have to show the frame to our VFX supervisor to get his permission.

3. Our whole lighting team used the Pantheon Toolset, a 2D lighting tool, built by our VFX supervisor. Here is an image of how the tool works on 2D animation and makes it volumetric.

4. This is a mask built by the clean-up artist, which helps lighting artists select the area that can be used for a bezier tool.

5.The volumetric lighting was achieved by several layers of lighting sources and adding them together.
